Whether interested in natural world or NC’s rich history, Wise asserted the Piedmont region catered to both. Historic sites highlighted included the Reed Gold Mine, site of the first gold discovery in the US; Chinqua-Penn Plantation, which contained art from around the globe; and Bennett Place, reconstructed Civil War site for General Johnson’s surrender to General Sherman. Nature and science lovers could be sated through Mount Morrow State Park; North Carolina Zoo, first state-owned zoo in the US; and Museum of Life and Natural Science, which contained the greatest treasure trove of outer space memorabilia.

Coe’s paper presents new evidence of the age of the oldest culture found in NC, while Harrington presents a paper outlining the work being done to find the Fort Raleigh site on Roanoke Island.

Good fishing can be found at most of the state parks in North Carolina. The best places to fish, the type of fish stocked at each park, and the best times of year to fish are described for 12 state parks. The fishing at Lake Norman, New River, South Mountains, Jordan Lake, Kerr Lake, Morrow Mountain, Fort Fisher, Fort Macon, Merchants Millpond, Pettigrew, Hanging Rock, and Eno River State Parks are all detailed. Hanging Rock, Eno River, and Fort Macon are highlighted with anecdotes and advice from parks employees and local fishing experts.

Work to build a parking lot at Morrow Mountain State Park unearthed the remains of a Native American village, and the project was halted until representatives from UNC’s Laboratory of Anthropology could inspect the site. A total of thirteen burials and fifteen other pits were excavated.
