Abstract:

During World War I, eighteen German sailors who were prisoners of war died of typhoid fever in a United States government hospital in Asheville. On November 10, 1932, a massive granite boulder was dedicated to their memory in Riverside Cemetery. Over 4,000 people attended, including the German ambassador who delivered remarks. It is the only memorial in this country erected by the American people to the German soldier dead of World War I.
