Recently, Durham has had a steady stream of new businesses focused on witchcraft, tarot, magic, healing work and sacred spaces. Bakara Wintner, who identifies as a white witch, opened a store called Everyday Magic. Witner has heard concerns about the business of magic expressed on social media, but she stands by her shop and her vision.

Utilizing empiricism as well as methods passed down from previous generations of Native American \"doctors,\" used a variety of techniques to cure illnesses. Sweathouses (bagnios), flagellation with rattlesnake teeth, moxabustion, inunctions with bear grease, deer tendons as sutures, use of ground up shells, and ingesting local plant life, are a few methods.

The Black Drink and Great Man, or a variety of tea and the known commonly gingsen, were among the multitude of remedies the Cherokee and Catawba produced from wild herbs. Such remedies, shamans in Nations such as these used in centuries past to treat a variety of medical conditions. What is modern is the regard for these remedies’ effectiveness, in particular for their power to provide a holistic cure.
