In celebration of the magazine’s golden anniversary was acknowledging100 events, spanning over two centuries, which affected Charlotte. Included was George Washington’s visit (1791); gold’s discovery (1799); James K. Polk’s election as president (1845); Charlotte Female Institute’s founding (1857); Charlotte becoming a music recording hub (1936-1940); NoDa arts district’s founding (1990s); the election of Pat McCrory, the first Charlotte mayor to become governor (2012); election of Vi Lyle, the first black female to become mayor (2017).

North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory has made a number of controversial decisions regarding civil rights, social issues, education, the environment, and transparent governance. This issue of Indy Weekly compiled a list of sixty-six reasons why McCrory should not be re-elected as governor.

The closing of Eden’s MillerCoors negatively impacted the town’s other large business, Morehead Memorial Hospital. Its closing served as a reminder of factors that leave towns like Eden and its rural Rockingham County economically vulnerable, such as brain drain and the rural-urban divide. Believed reasons why it closed included Anheuser-Busch In-Bev’s purchased SAB-Miller not having competition. Believed reasons why it remains closed includes the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina favoring cities.

The Department of Justice ruled that House Bill 2’s bathroom provision violated the Civil Rights Act and thus put billions of federal dollars at risk. Since then, Governor McCrory and the Department of Justice have sued one another. Now the case is headed to the Supreme Court.

Last Wednesday, Governor McCrory signed a law ending the ability of cities to create their own nondiscrimination measures, eliminating workplace-discrimination lawsuits, forbidding local governments from raising the minimum wage, and codifying anti-LGBT animus into state law. McCrory’s office dispatched a press release in response to backlash. However, it appears that most of the items in the release are false of half-truths.

Governor Pat McCrory will announce this week the second group of energy commission appointments. Critics like Jim Warren believe the Governor should not make such decisions based on his 28-year career at Duke Energy. Warren and other clean energy activists believe McCrory's ties with Duke Energy is a conflict of interest in choosing commission members responsible for regulating such big energy corporations.

Sixteen months after IndyWeek requested Governor Pat McCrory’s travel records, six months of records were provided by McCrory’s office. McCrory has promised a transparent, ethical, and accountable government, but that does not seem to be reality. The travel records requested are incomplete, but the ones provided are printed in a chart with the date traveled, the destination, the cost of the trip, and the reason for travel.

Governor Pat McCrory’s education ideas are explored. The governor has indicated that the universities in North Carolina need reforming and that money should be redistributed to programs that can prove their graduates get jobs. McCrory’s comments and position on education reform have many concerned and may indicate that the governor is not as moderate has he has led many to believe.
