Abstract:
"Charlotte picks a $10 million tribute to its most famous modern leader, erasing an earlier design." Thomas Polk Park, which opened in 1991, was demolished this past summer and will be replaced with a better designed space likely to be named in honor of banking leader Hugh McColl Jr. The redo has not gone without criticism.

In 1981, the banking boom began in Charlotte, North Carolina, mainly in part because of Hugh McColl. The former CEO of Bank of America helped reshape the banking industry in the United States and put the small city of Charlotte into a banking metropolis.

The city of Charlotte has seen fast expansion since the 1970’s, largely due to the Bank of America merger of 1998 by Hugh McColl. McColl, who fought to keep the Bank of America headquarters in Charlotte, used the bank to invest in the arts, professional sports, restaurants, hotels and more in order to keep developing Charlotte.

Abstract:
Hugh McColl, CEO of NationsBank, retired April 25, 2001. He is credited with building the bank into the nation's largest. Named CEO of NationsBank's predecessor, NCNB, in 1983, McColl took a bank with $12 billion in assets and built it, through mergers and acquisitions, into one with assets of $642 billion and 140,000 employees.
