The annual conference and antique show held at Omni Grove Park Inn will highlight the life and accomplishments of George Masa (1881-1933), an Asheville local who dedicated his life to capturing the beauty of Western North Carolina with film and photography.

In the early 20th century, a Japanese photographer and his writer friend traversed the rugged terrain north of Cherokee, mapping its peaks and valleys, documenting its beauty. In the process, they helped save the land we now know as Great Smoky Mountains National Park." Born in Japan in 1881, George Masa arrived in Asheville in 1915 and developed an interest in photography. In the process, he became and amateur cartographer. His works ended up on postcards, guidebooks and the National Geographic Magazine. He along with a companion Horace Keohart were instrumental in the region's natural preservation.

Abstract:
George Masa, an artist and photographer who lived in Asheville for 18 years, loved the mountains with a passion. Sent to the University of California, from Japan, to study mining engineering, George came to Asheville in 1915 and recognized the interest of visitors in photography, developing a flourishing commercial, news, and news reel service.

The author presents the various ways artists over a span of 200 years in Western North Carolina have used the medium to inspire others to protect the wilderness in order to instill a sense of place, home, and community in the region.
