Abstract:
Doug Monroe of Ashe County and John Swann of Yancey County are two maple syrup makers in the state who have tapped into a niche market. It takes forty-five gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. Monroe has 250 taps and Swann has 400 so their production is limited, and they sell their syrup only locally.

Abstract:
Edward Moseley and the famous Moseley Map are profiled. Moseley was the surveyor general of North Carolina and created his map to correct the mistakes in John Lawson’s 1709 map. The only copy of the map in the United States is owned by East Carolina University and its history and appearance are described.
