Abstract:
Dr. H.G. Jones received the 2002 North Carolina Award, the state's highest civilian honor for \"distinguished service and achievement.\" Among his many accomplishments are service as state archivist, 1956 to 1968; director Division of Archives and History, 1968 to 1974; and curator of the North Carolina Collection at the University of North Carolina Collection at Chapel Hill. Jones has published over one hundred works on North Carolina history.

H. G. Jones was awarded the Order of the Longleaf Pine on July 11,1996, for outstanding service to the state and its citizens. Dr. Jones is a former director of the North Carolina Department of History and Archives.

State Archivist H. G. Jones, a 37-year-old Caswell native, heads the largest department of archives in the nation. Guardian of documents for the entire family of four million North Carolinians, Jones is responsible for more than 7,000 cubic feet of records in the State Archives in Raleigh. Documents in Jones' charge include the 1663 Carolina Charter, county records, historical maps, and other valuable records of North Carolina's past.
