Shining Hope Farms, a therapeutic riding facility in Gaston County, North Carolina, serves people with a wide range of disabilities, including Asperger syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and brain injuries. The farm is run by Paul and Milinda Kirkpatrick, and offers various programs for Special Olympics athletes and handicapped horseback riders.

The Southern States Percheron Hitch is an award-winning team of six huge horses driven by two coachmen and pulling an unusual wagon loaded with bags of feed. The horses are based at the Person County farm of Tommy and Ann Lawrence. The Percheron Hitch is a popular attraction at the North Carolina State Fair and parades.

North of downtown Raleigh is horse country and the home of B-Bar Stables, where you can rent horses by the hour and ride the trails at your own speed. B-Bar has been owned and operated for twenty years by George Dalphus Browning, a true cowboy and horseman. George personally trained each of his sixty horses and can teach anyone how to ride a horse.
