North Carolina is recognized nationally for historical preservation. Currently over 300 preservation projects are underway statewide. Some, such as New Bern's Tryon Palace and grand plantation homes, are preserved as historical sites. Other structures, like downtown storefronts, mill villages and mills, schools, church buildings, and commercial office buildings are preserved not only for their historical value but also their utilitarian value as offices, cafes, shops, and condominiums.

Restoration architect Paul E. Stephens of New Bern received the 1999 Robert E. Stipe Professional Award. The award is given to working professionals demonstrating outstanding commitment to historic preservation as part of their jobs. In his fifteen years of preservation work, Stephens has earned a reputation for finding creative design solutions that preserve the historic detail of a structure and also meet the requirement of modern building codes.

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, located in western Carolina, established a tribal historic preservation office in December 1999. They are the twenty-first federally recognized tribe to do so. James Bird of the Eastern Band was appointed tribal historic preservation officer.

The L. Vincent Lowe, Jr., Business Award is the highest preservation award given to a state business for promoting protection of architectural resources in North Carolina. Durham architect G. Edwin Belk received the award for 2001 for \"successfully adapting historical buildings and industrial complexes for new uses.\" Among Belk's creations is Durham's Bright Leaf Square.

Participation in the National Register of Historic Places program has resulted in the listing of over 1,300 properties since 1970. Around 160 of these properties are historic districts, many with hundreds of buildings. Little discusses the program, including criteria for selection, role of consultants, the nomination of the property, and the future of the program in the state.

The Stedman Incentive Grant assists non-profit organizations in an effort to save endangered architecturally and historically significant property. The Old Baldy Foundation, formed in 1985 to save the deteriorating 1817 Bald Head Island Lighthouse, is the 1988 recipient. The grant not only helps with the financial need of the project, but also recognizes \"their monumental effort to rescue this endangered vestige of maritime history.\"

Robert E. Stipe of Chapel Hill received the nation's highest preservation honor in October 1988, when he was presented the 1988 Louise DuPont Crowninshield Award, given by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Edward H. Clement of Salisbury received a 1988 Preservation Honor Award. The men were recognized for their work in historic preservation at the local, state, and national levels.
