Weymouth, the Southern Pines home of novelist James Boyd, was saved from destruction in the 1970s, to become Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities. Over 600 writers have participated in the Writers-in-Residence Program.

Weymouth, novelist James Boyd's home in Southern Pines, was a meeting place for the Boyds and many of the country's best writers in the 1920s and 30s. Today Weymouth is divided into two parts: Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve and the Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities.

Abstract:

Weymouth, novelist James Boyd's 9,000-square-foot home in Southern Pines, was a meeting ground for the Boyds and many of the country's best writers in the 1920s and 30s. When the house was put up for sale after the Boyds' death, state poet laureate Sam Ragan led efforts that saved it from developers in the 1970s. Today Weymouth hosts many functions and also continues literary traditions with a Writers-in-Residence Program that grants writers two-week residencies to work on their projects.

Abstract:

Novelist James Byrd's mansion in Southern Pines, known as Weymouth, was recently purchased by a group of restoration enthusiasts. Environmentalists, naturalists, and literary organizations have all lent support to the restoration project. Upon completion, a committee of writers will selects prominent poets and writers to be awarded Weymouth Fellowships and attend retreats at the mansion.
