Abstract:
Besides contributing a number of men and women to the war effort, Haywood County's industrial plants are working round the clock producing material for war use. The largest plant is the Champion Paper and Fibre Company in Canton. The Dayton Rubber Manufacturing Company in Waynesville in the second largest. The Wellco Shoe Corporation is another firm making war materials. Green bean production saw 20,000 cases sent to the armed forces, and apples from the largest orchard east of the Mississippi are sent to servicemen. Another cash crop is burley tobacco.
