The resident named for her father’s mule or a family member held values characteristic of Hatteras Island life, such as deep religious beliefs. Activities betraying the time in which she grew up included her mother sewing clothes for a family of twelve. Ways she made a personal mark on her world included opening her home to tourists and village newcomers alike. From such acts of hospitality, a life commonly lived might also be called an uncommon life.

Abstract:
A fading art kept alive yet by quilters such as Mrs. Charlotte Balance. Tales told by Mrs. Nettie Gibson revealed changes in quilting standards. Decades ago, the summer and winter quilting parties noted by Mrs. Ballance made it a commonly collective activity. The experience, then, was quite different from the common contemporary practice of quilting as a solo project.

Abstract:
Boat building was described by way of steps such as chime plank cutting and bending the sides of the boat and parts such as transom, keel, ribs, bow stem, bottom, and washboards. Accompanying the textual description were pictures of these parts. Included were pictures of the steps in the boat building process such as bending the boat sides and cutting chime plank.

Abstract:
Called the gateway to Hatteras Island, the bridge built in the 1960s and named after Senator Herbert Bonner was experiencing the wear and tear of commuting use. Limitations on its daily use were imposed during its repair period. Such an occasion made Island residents all the more aware of the bridge’s importance in their way of life.

Abstract:
On paper, particularly newspaper, what Captain Bernice Balance might be best known for was his bravery. This characteristic was chiefly expressed during his career in the Life Saving Service, now called the Coast Guard. The life-saving incident that made the papers was his role in the rescue of Coast guardsmen adrift after a hurricane struck the North Carolina coast in September 1944. Incidents perhaps just as worthy of print included his catch of a seventy five pound channel bass, touted as the "world's record for drum caught in the surf."

Toys common during her great grandmother’s childhood were rag dolls for girls and carved boats for boys. These objects had the role toys typically play in any culture: to prepare children for anticipated gender roles to take on as adults. As to another cultural aspect revealed, the toys reflected a time perhaps regarded as simpler by many younger generations.

Times had changed, as indicated in the girls’ age range, 18-28, and a marital status for some. A sign of changed times was also evident in chaperones needed if males visited. Timeless values could be seen in purposes for a club with an overnight stay option: rest, reading, and recreation.

Glimpses of the past were perhaps seen most clearly in this collection of photos. One was a reminder of when the ferry was the only source of transport for humans and cargo. Others were reminders of businesses long since gone out of business, as well as buildings still standing. Most the photos, though, attested the importance of waterways around the Island, whether the creek familiarly known as the “Slash,” Core Sound, or Atlantic Ocean.

“A picture is worth a thousand words” comes to life nine-fold in these photos taken in Buxton. The time frame covered ranged from the reign of the model A to the prevalence of cars offering four-wheel drive. Scenic views were of forests, the lighthouse, and local homes. Activities mentioned for then and now noted the enduring value of family reunions and baseball.

Its recently celebrated centennial history included the destruction of its first structure by the Hurricane of 1933. As donations and many member fundraising efforts proved, a house of God wasn’t made just from newer wood and nails, not even the original lamps and piano.

Abstract:
With its water encroached existence, who became known later as Coast Guard was a natural need. Generations of Midgetts keeping the occupational tradition alive proved its value measured in ways deeper than the coastal waters. A collective generational expression was the Chicamacomico Historical Society's upkeep of one of the lifesaving stations. Efforts by a younger generation came from the Cape Hatteras High School Chicamacomico Lifesavers Club.

John W. Rollinson, b. 1827, kept a journal of his life at Hatteras, from teaching school, piloting boats, fleeing with his family from the Union soldiers, farming, porpoise fishing, being Collector for Port of Hatteras and being a magistrate.

Abstract:
The former Maude Miller had an eventful career history. She was first a schoolteacher at what was called a "pay school" by Hatteras Island residents. She became the county welfare supervisor during the 1930s, gaining experience with the Depression’s effects on the Island. As a postmistress, she was second generation employee (her father served during the 1800s). During World War II, she was a Coastal Observer, with the Navy issuing a service certificate. Of her late husband, Estus Preston White, she noted their common work background in education, with his work on the Board. His local administrative roles included chairman of Methodist Sunday School and electric plant, as well as county administrative work as a commissioner.
