Abstract:
William Gaston (1788-1844) remains one of North Carolina's most distinguished historical figures to date. In addition to serving as a Senator, Representative, and judge of the North Carolina Supreme Court, Gaston was president of the Bank of New Bern, author of the state song, THE OLD NORTH STATE, a University of North Carolina trustee for 42 years, and was nearly appointed Secretary of War by John Adams. Gaston County and Gastonia were named in William Gaston's honor.

Abstract:
A close examination was offered to three of the Palace's recent acquisitions. These were Eastern Piedmont pottery from the 19th and 20th centuries; manuscript collections from Judge William J. Gaston, whose accomplishments include penning “The Old North State”; a map of the Battle of New Bern, a 1900 blueprint copy of a map drawn by an unidentified Union soldier.

Judge William Gaston penned the North Carolina state song, The Old North State, in 1835. One account of the song's origins claims the tune was provided by a group of \"Swiss Bell-Ringers\" who one night serenaded Judge Gaston from his window. Gaston wrote the lyrics and set them to the tune of the serenade.

This history of North Carolina’s Supreme Court spans over two centuries. Whichard examined its legislature that became more progressive to the benefit of minorities and children. He revealed how over time this assembly of judges became more representative of North Carolina’s population. The author also noted judges who played a formidable role in its development such as John Louis Taylor, Walter Clark, and Sam Ervin IV.

Abstract:
William Gaston served as the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina between December 1833 and January 1844 alongside Thomas Ruffin and Joseph J. Daniel. His career in state legislation began in 1800 just two years after being admitted to the bar at the age of 22. The author reviews Gaston's illustrious career and his actions which made him a well-respected jurist among the state's citizens.
