In 1960 Lenoir-Rhyne College won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship for football. The story of that team and the lasting friendship football created for teammates Richard Kemp and Marion Kirby is told.

The homecoming parade for North Carolina A&T State, described by Hardin as having no start time or end, generates excitement perhaps normally allotted for major holidays. Labeled by the author as a happening rather than event, the happening founded in 1891 takes precedence for many Aggies over the football game following it. The happening’s significance is also perceived in photos illustrating A&T’s version of this aspect of the college experience.

Murphy selects two football teams in the state he feels were the best of all time. His criteria--players played in every game for ninety minutes; no substitutions; a few minutes rest at intermission; games as frequently as three or more a week. The teams were Trinity (now Duke) of 1891 and the North Carolina team of 1892. He also chooses an all-time team.

It's been 50 years since the Seventy-First Falcons won the N.C. High School Athletic Association's Eastern 3-A title. A plan to have members of the 1970 team gather for a remembrance was scrapped due to COVID-19.
