Scottie Montgomery’s tenure as head football coach was predicted to be promising, from his dedication to producing a quality football team and coaching staff. Among his players, he emphasized model student behavior, rigorous conditioning, community service engagement, and preparation for life post-graduation. For his coaching staff, he emphasized a family atmosphere and open door policy to help staff with limited experience develop professionally.

A note of thanks could be expressed because of more than monetary donations. There was the establishment of Minges Coliseum and Scales Field House, which hosted the golden age of ECU sports. Particularly credited for heralding in this age was Coach Clarence “Stas” Stasvich, who led three consecutive 9-1 seasons and bowl games.

Skip Holtz began his first year as coach of the East Carolina University football team in the fall of 2005. He takes over a team that has won just three games in the past two years. He is the 19th head football coach in the school's history. In this EAST magazine interview Holtz talks with Bethany Bradsher about being the new football coach.
