With a city-built high-speed gigabit internet infrastructure in place, a planning partnership between community, business, government, non-profit, health and education seeks to create a "quality of place" that will attract more industry to the area.

Despite not making the final bid as site for Amazon’s second US headquarters, the city of Hickory can claim fulfillment of its economic promise. Fulfillment of its promise is in industries such as furniture, which can measure success in 60% of furniture sold in the United States connected to the area. Success on a global scale can be measured in Hickory Furniture Mart’s attracting visitors from Asia, the Middle East, and Europe and drawing 500,000 visits annually.

A lack of access to high-speed internet service is an ongoing complaint among North Carolinians, especially in rural areas and smaller communities. Rural sections of the state are often bypassed by the larger cable providers--one reason being that they don't bring in enough revenue. Sixty years ago electric cooperatives brought electricity to these same areas. Now they are working to bring fast, reliable cable services to these areas. Miller describes a fiber-optic cable network that's going up across the state to bring \"the network to the unserved and underserved.\"
