During his almost fifty years as an architect, Tom Fazio has designed around two hundred golf courses, including eighteen in the state. Once he worked only on courses in the United States; however, a changing economy has forced him to look abroad for work. In this BUSINESS NORTH CAROLINA interview he discusses golf and the economic downturn and the state of the golf industry in North Carolina.
The Top 10 list of golf courses in the state hardly ever changes. However, in 1999, a rare event happened, one that has happened only once before, and that in 1998. A new golf course broke into the top 10. Tom Fazio designed both courses in 1996. Pinehurst No. 8 made the list in 1998, and its rival, Forest Creek Golf Club, replaced it on the list in 1999.
Tom Fazio spends his time designing, planning, dreaming and visualizing golf courses in his Hendersonville offices. He is one of the country's top course designers and he limits his work to creating only six courses at a time. His services can cost from 10 to 20 percent of a golf course's total construction costs. He has designed over 120 courses.
Hendersonville's Tom Fazio is one of the world's top golf course designers.
