The Duke immersive Virtual Environment, or DiVE, is a cyber-archaeology project funded by the Brazilian government and made for education and research, in collaboration with archaeologists at the University of São Paulo. The goal is for archaeologists to be able to experience a site without going there, and to have the ability to compare side-by-side different stages in an expedition.

Duke University Chapel’s carillon, a set of 50 bells, has been in use for over 80 years. They have a rather interesting history, and were in fact received as a gift in 1930, a bit after the bell tower was built. The bells are now a cherished part of the university, and shall be for many years to come.

Duke University’s “From the Archives” series pairs musicians and composers with archival materials stored in Duke’s Rubenstein Manuscript and Rare Book Library. Over the past year, North Carolina band Hiss Golden Messenger, has created an album to bring to life the images found in William Gedney’s photograph collection. The collection inspired a new stage show in addition to the new album, both entitled Heart Like a Levee.

“The Theme is Blackness” Festival was recently curated by Duke’s Theater Studies faculty. The event is a way to encourage diversity in theater. The number of minority students who participate in Duke’s Theater programs is approximately 10 percent and the department has not had any black directors of plays over the last 15 years. This year, the festival premiered a play produced by a black director and used a NC Arts Council grant to foster black stage designers. The festivals plays are intended to celebrate blackness and push audiences to consider issues of race.

Duke Energy and ConocoPhillips have donated 3.5 million dollars to Duke University’s Climate Change Policy Partnership (CCPP) and that financial support may have influenced public policy. The money may have influenced members of the CCPP’s advisory panel and affected its the ability to vet climate policy research before it is released to the public. Anti-regulatory policy statements have been published under the CCPP’s name and critics say that its research has been skewed because of the two companies support.

Harry Davidson inherited an orchestra desperately in need of leadership to develop its potential. His shared secrets of success included Mozart and Haydn as teaching tools for students and a passion for teaching. By year three of his leadership, faculty and students’ heightened morale inspired Davidson to start planning programs by the season rather than the concert.

Wearing apparel displaying college logos is often produced in third-world sweatshops. A Duke-logo baseball cap costs $20, and the university receives $1.50 through licensing. However, production costs only about eight cents in workers' wages. In 1997, some Duke students organized Students Against sweatshops to protest for better working conditions in factories that produce Duke-logo licensed material.

After thinking about having a new art museum for years, Duke University will build one. Duke alumnus Raymond Nasher will give $7.5 million of the $15 million cost. The 50,000-square-foot-building will bear his name. the scheduled opening is 2002.
