To preserve and to make people aware of the coastal waterfowling tradition, citizens on Harkers Island hold a yearly Core Sound Decoy festival. Proceeds fund a waterfowl museum.

Duck decoy carving has a long tradition in the Core Banks area. Jason Michels, 22, of Harkers Island, has been carving and painting decoys for the past five years. His skillful work has won him numerous local and national awards, including ones from the prestigious Ward World Championship Waterfowl Carving Championship, held in Maryland.

The Core Sound Decoy Festival is held in Carteret County every year and highlights the best duck decoy carvers in the nation. Carvers and collectors come from all the over the national to attend the festival, which was started in 1987 by the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild.
