Aaron Greenwald is the winner of a 2010 IndyWeek Triangle Arts Award. Greenwald is the director of Duke Performances. The concert series has been increasing in popularity thanks to Greenwald and his perspective. Greenwald has been stretching audiences with non-traditional performances, attracting younger and more diverse crowds.

Al McSurley is the winner of a 2007 Indy Citizen Award. McSurely is the Legal Redress Chair of the NC NAACP and works to fight racism using the law. The Chapel Hill resident operated a civil rights law practice prior to his retirement and was known for taking cases that nobody wanted. McSurely is unusual as a white lawyer who works almost exclusively with the civil rights movement, but his work is his way of seeing justice and equality become a reality.

All of Us NC has been awarded a Citizen Award by IndyWeek. The group is against the proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage in the state of NC. Since their formation, they have organized workshops and organized opposition groups. Part of their legacy will be the establishment of a system for advocating for progressive causes and their impact on queer people and their families in North Carolina.

Amanda Arrington is the winner of a 2008 Indy Citizen Award for positively impacting her community. Arrington is the director of the Coalition to Unchain Dogs to free dogs from their tethers by building fences around their yards. The group builds fences for pet owners who can’t afford them if the owners first agree to get their dog spayed or neutered.

Amber Smith is the founder of ME3 which matches people with volunteering opportunities. ME3 also fosters the spirit of volunteerism in high school, offering a Community Leadership and Service course. The course helps students work on projects which benefit their local communities.

Ray Eurquhart is the winner of a 2009 Indy Citizen Award for improving his community. Eurquhart is a Durham resident and community activist who is working to clean up crime, replenish affordable housing, and restore life to the Rolling Hills and Southside neighborhoods of Durham. Known as “Brother Ray,” Eurquhart helped found the Southside Community Outreach Center, applies for grants for the neighborhood association, created summer programs for schoolchildren in the neighborhood, and more to help the struggling community.

Foster is currently advocating for health care reform through his Billionaires for Wealth Care sketch. The sketch and his group have been featured on national tv as they make fun of billionaires afraid of losing their wealth through taxes to support health care reform.

Tamplin introduced listeners to local bands free of charge and still paid the artists to perform. His work fostering the careers of local acts is well-remembered.

The Committee to Save the Lakewood Y in Durham is the winner of a 2007 Indy Citizen Award. When plans were announced that the branch of the YMCA would be closed due to financial problems, the neighborhood residents took action. The branch is an inclusive place where socio-economic status and race never mattered and has been a staple of the local community. The committee is concerned that losing the YMCA and its programs will have a negative effect of the neighborhood and could lead to a decline in this inner-city neighborhood.

Philanthropist Dan Hill is the winner of a 2010 Indy Citizen Award for his positive contribution to society in the Triangle area. Hill is responsible for helping to revive the East Durham business district. Hill has helped bring in the TROSA Grocery, Godspeed Internet Café, and Joe’s dinner to the deserted district. The success of the shopping center where the businesses are located has helped restore pride in the neighborhood and provide food to residents who did not have a grocery store nearby.
