In the early 1990s, Gary Bryant owned a Hickory Hams shop. With sandwich sales outdistancing packaged hams, he saw a need for an upscale sandwich shop. He sold his business and opened the first Bear Rock Cafe in Greensboro in 1997. Today there are twenty-nine restaurants in nine states, including sixteen in North Carolina. The restaurants feature a mountain lodge décor and a varied menu of salads and sandwiches. Revenues in 2003 were $16 million.

Libby Hill Seafood Restaurants, Inc. started in 1953 when Luke and Elizabeth Conrad opened the first restaurant on the outskirts of Greensboro. Today, the company has four in Greensboro and one each in five other North Carolina cities; the company remains headquartered in Greensboro. Owner-operators run the nine restaurants.

James Maynard, a 1965 graduate of East Carolina University, started with a single steakhouse in Fayetteville and built it into a $1 billion business. Maynard is the co-founder and chairman of the company that runs the Golden Corral restaurant chain. Golden Corral, with around 500 restaurants, ranks number one in the family-style buffet restaurant industry with a 40 percent share of the market.
