The nine individuals interviewed represented the Carolina Biological Supply Company, Ward and Smith PA, Family Enterprise Center, Capel Inc., Conrad Industries, TradeMark Properties Inc., and Qualified Builders Inc. Topics included growing up in the family business, other career paths explored, family business histories, challenges unique to family-owned businesses, and how they anticipated keeping their family businesses for the next generation.

Carolina Biological Supply in Burlington produces scientific educational products that include everything from maggots to tarantulas to kits that teach genetic engineering. Dr. Thomas Powell, Jr., an Elon College biology professor, founded the company in 1927. The company sells to science teachers, medical schools, and other science organizations around the world from an inventory of over 30,000 items. Prior to this, science teachers were expected to go into the field and stream to get their specimens for classroom use.

Carolina Biological Supply Company was founded in Burlington in 1927 by Dr. Thomas E. Powell, Jr. The company's products list is endless and includes scientific instruments, materials for instruction in classroom or laboratory, and specimens of plants and animals, living or preserved. When the company started forty years ago, it began with one employee; today the workforce numbers 250.
