Before she was an acclaimed novelist, Susan Kelly of Rutherfordton, was a summer camper. Although Camp Yonahlossee outside Blowing Rock has been long closed, the memories of those days, which she recounts in this article, still linger.

Abstract:
Sky Ranch, the only camp for handicapped children in the Southeast, was started in 1947 by Marvin T. Culbreth and Jack B. Sharp. The camp, four miles from Blowing Rock, is surrounded by mountains and close to Lake Cannon, where children can enjoy boating and swimming. Horseback riding is the most popular activity, along with archery, hiking, nature lore, and Bible study.
