The story of the bookmobile in North Carolina is like the story of Mohammed and the mountain: many people found in inconvenient to go to the libraries, so the libraries proceeded to go to the people. They've been going in a big way. There now are 88 bookmobiles operating from one end of the state to the other.

Robert Walker and Ali Riegel are the co-coordinators of the Buncombe County Schools Bookmobile. The mobile stops at 30 different places in the county, including community centers, camps, mobile home parks, and apartment complexes. Their goal is to reach communities that do not have easy access to the library, particularly in the summer. The mobile's collection of thousands of books targets kindergarten through sixth-grade students, but also has books for middle and high school students.
