Scruggs is best remembered along with Lester Flatt for their performance of the "Ballad of Jed Clampett" associated with the 1960s television comedy "The Beverly Hillbillies". The Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby is located in Shelby's 1907 Courthouse.

Bluegrass is an integral part of the music history of Western North Carolina. The music has changed very little over the decades, but that has not diminished its popularity. The music still carries the themes of the simple folk and the trials and tribulations they face, as well as harkening back to a time when life was much different.
