The first exhibit highlights twentieth-century painters. The second exhibit exemplifies the independence and interdisciplinary qualities for which the school is famous.

The Black Mountain College Museum, located in Asheville, honors a unique institution that lasted only twenty-four years but is remembered as an innovative experiment in higher education. Established in 1933, the college never had an enrollment of over one hundred even in the best of years, yet fifty years later, its faculty and student body reads like a who's who of cultural visionaries.

Abstract:
Emil Willimetz, the son of Austrian immigrants, was without direction after his graduation from high school in 1936. He took to the rails and roads of the United States, hitchhiking his way until he came to Black Mountain College in Black Mountain, North Carolina. After a fortuitous encounter with some Black Mountain College faculty, Willimetz found a home at the college that set him on a path towards a career in print, photo, and film.
