The Civil Rights movement’s seeds were planted decades earlier and in historically black colleges such as Bennett. Here, Bennett Belles were inspired by campus leaders like David Dallas Jones as much as nationwide leaders like Vernon Johns. Education and race consciousness fortified them to help instill equality through campus and community activism.

Playing as influential a role as many better-known Civil Rights Movement leaders, Bennett’s president inspired its students to fight for social justice. She encouraged students to participate in protests, inspired by the 1960 Woolworth’s sit in, and initiate blacks to become more politically involved, by registering to vote.

There are two historically black, women's colleges in the United States -– Spelman, in Atlanta, and Bennett, in Greensboro. Johnnetta Cole has been president of both. She revived Spelman and has, since coming to Bennett in 2002, brought the school back from the brink of bankruptcy. Cole is profiled in this BUSINESS NORTH CAROLINA article.

The author tells of the Bennett College women who joined in the Woolworth Lunch counter sit-ins and continued to picket and march for equality. Dr. Esther Terry, who had taken part in the movement said “Bennett taught me that a meaningful education came with a responsibility, not only to recognize injustice, but to act against it.’
