Jim Collins, William Bernstein, Kim Irwin, and Clarence Morgan were all recently awarded a fellowship from the North Carolina Arts Council. Their work is also featured in a new exhibit in the North Carolina Gallery. A short biography and description of their artistic style is provided along with a description of the selection process for the applicants by the North Carolina Arts Council.

The self-portraits of Viennese artist Arnulf Rainer will be exhibited in the Contemporary Gallery this winter. This will be the first solo exhibition of Rainer’s work in North America. Rainer’s portraits have been altered after they were drawn on by the artists creating extreme emotional images. Rainer’s work is often described as disturbing or violent due to the distorted images.

Ten paintings from the Weatherspoon Art Gallery at the University of North Carolina Greensboro are on display in the Contemporary Gallery from August 13-October 23. The paintings were all made within the within the last twenty years and use the vocabulary of geometry for their visual language. Works by David Novros, Robert Mangold, Al Held, Alfred Jensen, William Bailey, Roger Brown, William Copley, and Alex Katz.

A selection of 9 prints by 5 German artists will be exhibited in the Twentieth Century Gallery conjunction with the Modern German Masterpieces from the Saint Louis Art Museum exhibition. Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Mueller, Kathe Kollwitz, and Georg Schrimpf will have their prints displayed. The graphic arts were of major importance to the Germans and helped to develop their individual styles of their paintings. The prints are known for their high emotional content and are among the group’s greatest accomplishments.

In celebration of the 400th anniversary of British settlement in North Carolina, the Museum is presenting works by three of the most influential British artists working today. The work of the duo Gilbert & George and Richard Long will be on display in the Contemporary Gallery. Long’s work concerns the world of nature and how man interacts and affects it. Gilbert & George’s work explores the mind and the struggles people undergo to answer questions about good, evil, hope, and desire.

The new exhibit Howard Pyle and The Wyeths: Four Generations of American Imagination places the art of artists, Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, and Jamie Wyeth. The exhibition explores the impact Pyle had on three generations of Wyeth’s as N.C. Wyeth’s teacher. From the Brandywine School, the four artists are connected by the narrative quality of their work. A description of the four artists’ work and their impact on each other and viewers is discussed in a preview to the exhibition.

North Carolina artist Jim Starrett’s paintings and drawings will be on display in the North Carolina Gallery this fall. Dating from 1976 to 1983, Starrett’s work focuses on the failure of organized religion to actively oppose the Nazis during World War II. Of particular focus is the Catholic Church and Pope Pius XII’s lack of action. His works are full of symbolism and are marked by a hard-edged, linear geometry and loose brushwork.

Fannie and Alan Leslie bequeathed 30 paintings to the Museum and 13 paintings from their collection are currently on display. The Leslie Collection paintings are examples of modern American art and include major works by leading Southern California modernists. In a preview of the exhibition, the works and styles of artists Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Hans Burkhardt, and Lee Mullican are detailed.

This exhibition will feature forty-five works by major figures in the German avant-garde during the early 20th century. Artists represented include Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Franz Marc, Lyonel Feininger, Emil Nolde, and most importantly, Max Beckmann. Half of the exhibition is devoted to Beckmann who has been described as the greatest German painter of the 20th century. The exhibition is previewed with particular attention given to Beckmann, his biography, his paintings, and his style.

Africano’s work focuses on human beings, their pleasures, suffering, dismay, and fulfillment. His subjects are painted in high relief on blank fields of color to draw attention to the persons. Africano’s style, impact, and works are discussed to preview the exhibition.
