Abstract:
Women in North Carolina are entering the local meat business at a rate well above the national average. This year Orange County hosted the third Women Working in the Meat Business Conference. Attendees learned about farming, raising livestock, butchering meat, and new entrepreneurial opportunities.

During the Colonial period, sheep were popular livestock raised throughout Carteret County. The wool was used for home spun clothing while lamb and mutton were staples in the local diet. Sheep were so prevalent that Portsmouth Island was also known as “Sheep Island.”

Farmers of the coastal plain section of North Carolina can be completely understood by each other and almost incomprehensible to others. Shades of meaning of some phrases or terms depend much on locale, and dissimilar terms sometimes describe an identical activity. Additionally, the passage of time and the advent of new agricultural technology yields a changing and newer dialect.
