Abstract:
During 1980 and 1981, eight significant writers in North Carolina passed away. The list of the dearly departed include historian Hugh T. Lefler, newspapermen Harry Golden and Jonathan Daniels, literary critic Hugh Holman, poet laureate of North Carolina James L. Person, and literary writers Thad Stem, Paul Green, and Guy Owen. These giants of the written word have left their marks upon the literary landscape of North Carolina.

This year, many North Carolina writers published award-winning books. There was a total of fifty-six books entered in the competitions for which awards were presented during Culture Week, November 12-16. This article highlights the winning books and provides background on each of the authors.

Ragan examined an artistic expression array manifested on canvases literal and figurative. It was revealed in Edenton and Tryon Palace’s restorations. The State Library’s film service expansion and ECU’s summer drama program’s production of “The Lost Colony” displayed it. Poetry and prose were showcased in Atlantic Christian’s Crucible and ECU’s Poet-in-Residence program.

The State of North Carolina spent years building its reputation as Variety Vacationland and, in the process, made its travel promotion as well-known as its travel attractions. In a Carolina Country contest, there were nine student winners who wrote about why they think North Carolina is called Variety Vacationland. The judges comment on their selections and present the winning essays in this article.
