This year, people from the Triangle got their fifteen seconds of social media fame. One of the most delightful viral videos was a clip of six-year-old Raleigh native Johanna Colon dancing to Aretha Franklin’s song Respect. Other viral videos were of a plane breakup, swim team stuck at Raleigh-Durham Airport, Durham Academy a cappella group XIV Hours, and the Muslim student murders near Chapel Hill.

Notable comedy acts in the Triangle this year were feminist comedy, the monthly Bulltown Comedy Series held at Fullsteam brewery, and the fifteenth anniversary of the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival. Local comedians earned national notices and Raleigh’s Adam Cohen launched Band Candy, a YouTube channel featuring animated shorts voiced by local comedians.

Duncan Trussell is an Asheville-born, Los Angeles-based comedian known for his podcast called The Duncan Trussell Family Hour. As an advocate for psychedelic plant medicines, he is also known to go off on random tangents. Trussell returns to North Carolina on his There Are No Drugs on This Bus Tour, performing Friday at Cat’s Cradle in Chapel Hill.

The Best Show with Tom Scharpling is a podcast radio show that has attracted devotees from the worlds of music and comedy. Every Tuesday night, Scharpling has phone conversations with Chapel Hill’s Jon Wurster, who portrays a fake caller from the fictional town of Newbridge, New Jersey. The eccentric phone conversations feature comedy and music critiques.

University of North Carolina graduates are making their mark on pop culture. Joseph Headen coined the word “bruh” and has used its popularity to build a business around the word. Chris Kelly has created shows and content for Carton Network’s Adult Swim. Headen and Kelly have both had their content transformed into viral memes and viewed by millions of people. Their inspirations and success stories are shared along with other area residents who have worked on popular tv shows.
