Abstract:
In May, the North Carolina Wildlife Federation hired its first western regional executive for the state. Dixon Herman will work with and start local affiliate wildlife clubs and camps, attend public hearings, and facilitate education and public outreach. Some problems the Federation will address pertain to forest management, multiple-use issues, and the animal rights movement.

The North Carolina General Assembly plans to invest over $9 billion in the state highway program. To help diminish the possible environmental side effects, concerned citizens can get involved in the planning process. They can also urge county governments to implement a Natural Areas Inventory for protecting sensitive habitat.

Abstract:
Catch-and-release has become significant for anglers in North Carolina coastal waters. To preserve resources, state and federal regulations now determine limits for many saltwater game fish. There is also growing popularity of tagging programs that award money to fishermen and help scientists determine the age of fish.

Bottomland hardwoods in the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge are essential areas that help to control flooding, filter water, and provide wildlife habitat. But different people see the bottomlands in different ways. Jerry Holloman, manager of the refuge, is trying to show local citizens why the areas are so important.

Pete Bromley is the new wildlife extension specialist at the N.C. Agricultural Extension Service, a public outreach program of land grant universities. He is in charge of activities in wildlife, inland fisheries, and aquaculture, and is developing programs in wetland and waterfowl management.

Saltwater fishing has long been viewed as one of the last free recreational sporting activities left in North Carolina. Now there is debate over possible saltwater license requirements. The state would benefit financially from a license system, but there are mixed feelings among local businesses and commercial fishermen.
