Abstract:

The State Highway Commission was authorized in 1915 and in 1921 financed all bridge construction within the state. Prior to this state level organization cities and counties had to construct bridges. Mr. Wm. L. Craven, hired in 1916, remained one of the head bridge engineers for the department.

Abstract:

The State Highway and Public Works Commission allowed the Bridge Department to survey along the Albemarle Sound in preparation for a bridge installation. The survey started at Leonard Point to the south and ended at Sandy Point to the north. Surveyors used the method of triangulation to determine the distance across the sound was 18,276.53 feet. Survey work also included soundings along the proposed stretch to determine water depth. A result of the survey proposed a bridge that would cost roughly $3,500,000.

Abstract:

One of the state's earliest bridges was constructed near Hertford in the 1780s. Citizens of the town wished to cross the Perquimans River to visit Elizabeth City and Virginia destinations. The man hired for the job was Mr. Perry who traversed the river that was 20 feet deep and 600 feet wide with old whiskey barrels lashed together. A more modern bridge replaced the whiskey barrels in 1885 and finally a steel and concrete bridge was erected in 1928.
