Start-up airlines are a gamble. Of forty-three jet airlines begun between 1978 and 1992, only two remain. Tiny Greensboro-based Eastwind Airlines, Inc., which started in 1995 with two planes, hopes to be the exception.

In the winter of 1753, the Moravian church in Pennsylvania sent twelve young men to the Piedmont section of North Carolina to start a settlement which they called Bethabara. This village gave way in the 1760s to the newer town of Salem. Several of Bethabara's original buildings and stone foundations remain. Today the state's first Moravian settlement is a historic site and city park.

Joseph Wallace King of Winston-Salem paints under the name of Vinciata and possesses an international reputation. King has painted a number of portraits of famous people, including Queen Elizabeth II and Richard Nixon. He has even served as a legislator from Winston-Salem to the North Carolina General Assembly. Carr discusses King's life and work.
