The number of wineries across North Carolina has more than tripled over the past ten years, with half a dozen new ones scheduled to open in 2004, bringing the total to thirty-six. This article provides information on wineries, wine tours and festivals throughout North Carolina. Ten of the wineries and vineyards are located along the Yadkin Valley Wine Trail, located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina.

The coast is often called North Carolina's cradle of civilization--the place where a group of colonists faded into history as the 'Lost Colony,' and man took his first steps toward space on the Wright Brothers plane. Verna describes four places to visit: Deadwood in Martin County, a family-owned, western-themed park; Merchants Millpond State Park in Gates County, featuring 3,259 acres of coastal pond and southern swamp forest habitats; Somerset Place in Washington County, a 37-acre state historic site that affords a glimpse into 19th-century plantation life; and the Cape Lookout National Seashore in Carteret County, three undeveloped barrier islands half-a-mile wide containing a lost town, lighthouse, and solitude.

The Stoneybrook Steeplechase is a Sandhills tradition attracting thousands of spectators, the world’s best horses, jockeys and trainers. The cross-country steeplechasing race became popular in Stoneybrook when horseback rider Michael G. Walsh established the Carolina Horse Park currently used for equestrian events. The 53rd annual steeplechase is set for April 3, 2004.

Born in Watauga County in 1884, W.R. Trivett taught himself the art and science of photography to supplement his farming income. Trivett’s photographs challenged the stereotypical views of Appalachians being poor, uneducated, and isolated. The majority of Trivett’s subjects followed popular culture and represented the truest portraits of the region.
