Marilyn Sheerer has been East Carolina’s provost since 2007, and in that time has brought the university through accreditation, creation of the Honors College, and expansion of the Department of Engineering. After retiring as part of the ECU administration, Sheerer will return as a full professor in the higher education doctoral program.

The authors recount how East Carolina University took a big step toward integration four years before the first black student enrolled at the university when the Dave Brubeck Quartet performed there on the night of February 5, 1958. Brubeck arrived with a new bassist, Eugene Wright, who was black, and there were laws preventing black performers from appearing on stage. A compromise was reached, but the dam had been breached. Many black performers appeared in the following years.

Defensive end Matt Milner uses simple physics to up his football game, and so far, it has paid off. As a four-time Chancellor’s List honoree and Commissioners Academic Medal awardee, Milner has also been selected for the Conference USA All-Academic Team, been the first Capital One Academic all-American selection in ECU football history, and chosen as ECU’s Outstanding Male Scholar athlete.

Dr. Ashley White, East Carolina class of 1986, has traveled the world in search of archaeological sites, but his greatest achievement has occurred right in his own backyard. After a series of storms caused erosion on his family’s farm in Ocala, Florida, White discovered pottery and coins that point to occupation by conquistador Hernando de Soto.

An ECU professor didn’t have to travel far to find treasure. Among treasure discovered by Ashley White was a shipwreck, originally found around the Outer Banks in the late 1930s and much later confirmed as Blackbeard’s flagship. Another treasure trove, discovered near Ocala, FL, were coins minted during the reign of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.
