Abstract:
Most people whistle from time to time, but for Phyllis Heil of Hickory, whistling is a lifelong hobby. When she was four, one of her brothers gave her a whistling lesson, she has been perfecting her art ever since. She began performing publicly when someone overheard her whistling in the church basement. She has performed at funerals, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers, and the church choir. In 2003, she took some classes at the International Whistlers Convention in Louisburg and watched the competitions. She returned in 2004 to compete and placed third in the women's division. In 2005, she again placed third in the women's grand championship and won the Entertainer of the Year Award. She has appeared on the Jay Leno Tonight Show and has recorded two CDs of her music.

Abstract:
The Bovender family of Rutherford County, Tim, Nell, and children Will and Ali, are the 2006 North Carolina Farm Conservation Family of the Year. The farm began in 1768 as a 200-acre land grant from King George III and has grown into a 1,000-acre one. The award is given annually by the North Carolina Division of Soil and Water Conservation and recognizes farmers who implement conservation-friendly techniques on their farms, often at great personal expense. Placing one-third of the farm under a conservation easement and installing 45,000 feet of fencing to keep cows out of streams that flow through the farm are two conservation things the family has done.

Abstract:
Scott Blackwell founded the Immaculate Baking Company, which makes gourmet cookies, in 1995. Blackwell also travels the back roads of the South to find the art of obscure, often elderly folk artists. He promotes this folk art by putting it on packages of his cookies. On the sides of the packages he includes photographs and profiles of the artists. Currently Blackwell is engaged in building the Folk Artist's Museum next to the cookie plant. The museum is scheduled to open in 2006.
