Abstract:
The southern water shrew is a semi-aquatic long-tailed soricid found in the Appalachian mountains. Its actual distribution and status may be inadequate because it is difficult to capture. The first record of the southern water shrew is an adult male collected from Graham County, North Carolina.

Abstract:
Although sizeable literature exists on Southern Appalachian mammals, some western North Carolina counties, such as Graham, have gaps in the distributional records for a number of small mammal species. The remote nature of the region contributes to these gaps. The authors discuss small mammal surveys conducted in this county in the Nantahala National Forest in September 2003 and in September 2005.

Abstract:
She was designed as a Bicentennial project, bearing a brand of authenticity in its fifteen stars and stripes flag. However, this sailing vessel still may have been a point of pride, since clipper ships had played an important role in America the past two centuries, notably during the war of 1812.

Along the North Carolina and Virginia coasts, hundreds of shipwrecks lie on the beaches and underwater. Although some will never be uncovered, others are popular tourist and dive destinations like the DIAMOND SHOALS LIGHTSHIP and the USS MONITOR.

Of personal interest to the author were also items of historical interest. Up close and personal was the view that he offered of sunken ships, as well as the marine life that lived around them. As visual illustration was a map locating the wrecked watercrafts, which included a German submarine. Accompanying the map was a brief description of each: an old boiler, LST#741, Richmond, Kyzickes, Zane Gray, U-85, and York.

Making trawls nets is an art form, and Matthew Salter of Alliance, North Carolina has been practicing it for 37 years. With specialized needles and templates, Salter makes nets of all sizes and shapes for local fisherman that travel all over the country.
