Taylor Hicks’ success was an illustration of ECU’s slogan “on hands on deck.” In this partnership were SEED@ECU, the Pitt County Economic Development Commission, Uptown Greenville, and the Greenville Chamber of Commerce. Inspiring other locals to contribute to Greenville/Pitt County’s economic boom story were examples of local business owners. Also as encouragement was a nod to small business’ substantial contribution to the national job market.

The promise of better food through science was recognized in two initiatives promising to generate growth in jobs, markets for farmers, and manufacturing. One was the Plant Sciences Initiative, the other the Food Processing Innovation Center. Collectively, they promised to produce greater crop numbers, pioneer crop varieties, and lower farm animals’ feed expense. Collectively, they may also help to assure the supply of food needed to feed the world’s population, projected to be 9.6 billion by 2050.

In Chris White's San Diego-based White Labs, Inc., he combines his two passions: chemistry and beer. White Labs is the largest yeast supplier for breweries across the United States and has opened a new location in Asheville, North Carolina. The location attracted White due to the brewers such as Sierra Nevada and New Belgium.

The increasing integration of technology into work environments challenges individuals with only a high school diploma. Greatly helping them build their technical skill sets and become competitive in today's job market is community colleges. Colleges and programs helping students fulfill this goal include Guilford Technical Community College’s Aviation Manufacturing Program and Pitt Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing Institute.

Old Faithful refers not to the famous Yosemite Park geyser, but to nuclear power. This energy source provides a substantial source of power, with nearly a third of the state’s electricity generation. Currently challenges to its predominance include a diversity of energy sources, including alternative fuel sources like biofuels and traditional fuel sources such as natural gas. What may make nuclear energy worth continuing an investment in is cost. North Carolina energy costs, ranked as among the least expensive in the United States, can attribute this to factors such as nuclear power being a low cost energy source.

Universities across North Carolina have an eclectic approach when it comes to their degree programs. Recognizing the collective student body’s transformation in the past few decades, universities such as NC State and High Point University are trying to better meet their students’ needs. Examples include NC State’s MBA collaboratories, or half day workshops involving field experts and senior leaders, and High Point’s MBA courses, which are typically twenty minute lecture, two hour and forty minute group discussion and interaction.

Businesses finished 2020 at a record clip, setting them up for a strong run this year." In 2019, there was great optimism with economic development in the state. Despite initial setbacks, at the start of the pandemic, economic promoters signaled a recovery by early summer 2020 as developers and companies alike were finding new ways of cementing relationships and expanding opportunities. Originally, Tommy Wheeler was looking to find a crop that would attract ducks in Pamlico County, where he hunts. He and Al Spruill formed Tidewater Grain Co. in 2018, which markets an heirloom variety of rice referred to as Carolina Gold. While more expensive than growing corn as food for ducks, consumer demand for the rice variety is highly sought after and profitable.
