Abstract:

The Aurora Fossil Museum, located in Aurora, North Carolina, was founded in 1976 and was the first fossil museum in the region. The museum displays the fossils uncovered in phosphate deposits in the area. In 2016, the museum celebrates its fortieth anniversary and its rich history in educational outreach and promoting geology.

Abstract:

The Herring Club, a social club in Washington, North Carolina, is a fellowship group centered on socializing and fish fries. It began in the late 1940s with a group of volunteer firemen and still continues today. Although some of the traditions have shifted, the purpose of the group remains the same.

Abstract:

While other fishing locations like the Gulf of Mexico and along the Outer Banks are more well-known, the Pamlico River has opportunities for fishermen--\"a river not taken by many.\" Rowe points to its location in relation to the Gulf Stream which brings a variety of species from the North and South. Its remoteness is also one of its biggest attributes--it's pristine and unspoiled. The Pamlico offers fishermen four saltwater sport fish--striped bass, flounder, speckled trout, and puppy drum, also called red fish. Secondary species are numerous and include white perch, largemouth bass, bowfin, croaker, and Spanish mackerel.

Abstract:

Beaufort County has a growing archery community centered around the BoCO Archers Club, a 50-member group that competes against other archery clubs throughout eastern North Carolina. Club members learn from each other and pass on their knowledge of archery to children to keep the sport alive.

Abstract:

Sailing is a prevalent past time in Beaufort County, especially on the Pamlico River. All styles and sizes of boats sail on the Pamlico throughout the summer. Young sailors can also learn the art of sailing at the Little Washington Sailing School, which offers ten fundamentals classes each summer.
