The Carolina Economic Recovery Corps is a group of UNC graduate students and recent graduate professionals who aim to help impoverished communities research and apply for federal stimulus funding. Many of the corps interns were recently hired for full-time positions working with the government councils they had worked with.

Thomas Egan and his team are testing new technology that could drastically increase the number of lungs suitable for transplant. Egan thinks it could also help surgeons to draw from a donor pool that no one has ever before considered.

Abstract:

Jacqueline MacDonald is an environmental engineer and principal investigator on a UNC research grant to figure out which environmental problems posed the greatest danger to public health in the United Arab Emirates. They found that rapid population growth, development, and industrialization have drastically deteriorated air quality and increased occupational risks. They are now aiming to complete a strategy to protect populations from environmental pollution.

Abstract:

Bill Ferris is a UNC professor of history and folklorist who records stories and blues music ranging from everyday black farmers and churchgoers to blues masters such as B.B. King and Willie Dixon. Ferris is particularly interested in the meaning of blues music and how it is used to tell stories and bring African American communities together.

Abstract:

David Mora-Marin is an assistant professor of linguistics and one of the few specialists in ancient Mayan languages from around 400 BC to 200 AD. A recent article was published about the writing system used by the Olmecs, the first civilization in Mesoamerica. Mora-Marin analyzed the Olmec writing tablet and found patterns that contradict the researchers’ findings.

Abstract:

Strains of tuberculosis have mutated and become resistant to multiple drugs due to decades of inconsistent drug supplies, drug shortages, and poor drug quality. According to UNC researchers, we are potentially getting close to a bacteria that we have no tools or weapons against. In response, they are studying causes of the disease and exploring new treatment options for patients in Africa.

Anthropologist Norris Brock Johnson has studied many of Japan’s Zen Buddhist temple gardens, Tenru-ji being the first. Brock learned that gardens serve as spiritual and pedagogical purposes, and have hidden symbolic meanings.

Abstract:

The Guatemala City garbage dump is the largest landfill in Central America. The scavengers who recycle the dump’s trash help reduce Guatemala’s waste, but breathe toxic fumes and sift through biohazardous materials to do it. The dump has become a research site for UNC students studying public health, elementary education, or environmental science.

Computer scientists Ming Lin and Dinesh Manocha developed a modeling and simulation program that is being used to train military soldiers how to stay alive in the combat zone. Other software is being developed to train first responders, emergency response, and police, and to simulate hurricane evacuations.

Textbooks often show pools of magma underneath volcanoes. While such pools do exist, new research by geologists Allen Glazner and Drew Coleman suggest that magma pools are probably much rarer than scientists previously thought.

UNC’s art librarian, Pat Thompson, researched an artist named Edith Branson. Branson had a unique painting style but she never promoted her work. Thompson found there are many other anonymous women artists, so she published a list of artists in the library’s North Carolina Women Artists file.
