Ruth Little has written a work entitled STICKS AND STONES: THREE CENTURIES OF NORTH CAROLINA GRAVEMARKERS. Although not a catalog of every historic gravemarker in the state, the book does provide a guide to major types of markers, how they have changed over the years, and what they mean.

African-American grave markers in New Hanover, Davidson, Lincoln, and Cumberland Counties tend to be creative in style and inscription, yet fragile due to materials used. Traditional markers are the mound, head and foot, enclosure, and sculpture.

Participation in the National Register of Historic Places program has resulted in the listing of over 1,300 properties since 1970. Around 160 of these properties are historic districts, many with hundreds of buildings. Little discusses the program, including criteria for selection, role of consultants, the nomination of the property, and the future of the program in the state.
