Science teachers from all over North Carolina are given the chance to take part in a DataStream Ocean course, given at the Field Research Facility on the Outer Banks in Duck, North Carolina. There they get hands-on experience with coastal scientific research projects and instrumentation.

A new 1,000 foot, public educational and fishing pier has risen phoenix-like on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Jennette's Pier at Nags Head will reopen as a unit of the North Carolina Aquariums Division and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

North Carolina's last surviving menhaden fishing-and-processing plant is Beaufort Fisheries, located in Beaufort in Carteret County. Latham discusses owner Jule Wheatly's efforts to keep the family-owned operation running and the viewpoints of others who feel a fish factory has no place in 2003 Beaufort, a tourist town of \"tony shops and historic homes.\"

North Carolina’s beaches and sand dunes are vulnerable to erosion, and therefore depend on sea oats and beach grass for stabilization. David Nash, a doctoral candidate at North Carolina State University, is growing sea oats that may not only help stabilize sand dunes, but also offer farmers an alternative crop. Nash applied tobacco germination techniques to develop a float system for cultivating local sea oat seeds.

Ron Rice is an Asheville native who went to Florida after college to teach school, coach football, and dabble in oil--suntan oil. His personal worth is estimated at $30 million. He owns Tanning Research Labs, Inc., which employs 3,000 people in fourteen countries. The company generates revenues of over $100 million annually. His empire was built on a popular tanning lotion--Hawaiian Tropic tanning products--which he began mixing in bathtubs and garbage cans. The product now is second only to Coppertone.
