Dr. Leslie Alexandre is president and CEO of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, which is located in the Research Triangle Park. The center was created in 1984 by Governor James B. Hunt. Alexandre came to the center in 2002 and is helping North Carolina attain new heights in an industry where it already excels. Many state leaders give Alexandre much credit for helping the state become the third leading biotechnology state in the nation in terms of companies and employees. Dr. John Weems retired in June 1999 as president of Meredith College, after twenty-eight years of service. Known as a visionary leader and thinker, Weems saw a number of changes during his tenure. The college had a $2 million deficit when he arrived; he leaves the school debt free and financially stable; enrollment up by 1,200; and faculty positions, as well as the number of degrees, almost doubled.

The North Carolina Business Hall of Fame, established in 1988, recognizes business leaders who made significant contributions to building the state's economy and who provided outstanding community and statewide service. Inductees must be retired from day-to-day operation of their organization or be at least seventy years of age. The 2005 honorees are William A. V. Cecil, owner, Biltmore Estate, Asheville; Hugh L. McColl, Jr., former CEO Bank of America, Charlotte; W. David Stedman, former textile executive, entrepreneur, and former NCCBI chair; and Joan Zimmerman, CEO Southern Shows and NCCBI Board member, Charlotte.
