Featured was the Chairman of the Raleigh based Congressional Club and newly formed Coalition for Freedom. Ellis discussed his reasons for switching to the GOP. He also expounded on a belief in a revival of Republican support across NC. Among evidence offered was the election of its first Republican senator in the century, Jesse Helms, an election in which Ellis played a pivotal role.

The perception of college cheerleaders tends to focus on female sexuality rather than athleticism. While cheerleaders at Duke University and North Carolina State University maintain the feminine uniforms, they are highly talented athletes who go through intense training programs. Male cheerleaders are also discriminated against, and Duke no longer allows them to participate in the sport.

Holding the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Tournament outside the borders of the state is considered a sacrilege by many fans. In the fifty-two-year history of the tournament, this has happened only eight times. Jacobs discusses the differences in the way fans react to tournaments held outside the state to they way the respond to those played in North Carolina.

In his ninth season at Duke, Michael Krzyzewski has established himself near the top of his profession and is a leading candidate to coach the 1992 U.S. Olympic basketball squad. The key to Duke’s success, and the trademark of Krzyzewski teams, is a fierce defense. Duke now enters the post-season tournaments with hope to win the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship.

Vacation and recreation spots typically heavily populated—Atlantic Beach and the Appalachians. A place formerly popular was Hot Bed Springs. What made the originally named Warm Springs a hot bed for visitors was not entertainment venues, historic sites, or recreation areas. It was the reputed curative powers of its waters.

The 35th season of Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball is entering its third and final phase. For Duke University and North Carolina State University, the tournament provides a chance to build momentum and define their season's success. The University of North Carolina was the top regular season finisher this year, and has a good chance of winning the tournament.

North Carolina State had just won its first contest of the 1989 Atlantic Coast Conference basketball season. But their future fell apart when word surfaced of a book by New York writer Peter Golenbock detailing extensive wrongdoing within the N.C. State basketball program. While there are numerous allegations of violation and corruption, there are no concrete facts.
