On November 5, 1997, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill honored the founder of the Institute of Government, Albert Coates, and his wife Gladys Hall Coates, by renaming the original Institute building for them.
John L. Sanders, former director of the University of North Carolina's Institute of Government, has received one of the six North Carolina Awards for 1996. Presented by the governor, it is the state's highest civilian award.
