Unlike northern mill villages, where there were rowhouses or apartments, mill villages in North Carolina tended to have detached, single-family dwellings with lots for gardens or animals. There was no indoor plumbing, and wells were shared. Other village buildings included warehouses, the company store, an area for recreation, a church, and a school.

Durham Neighborhood Housing Services (NSH), a nonprofit organization established to stimulate confidence and reinvestment in Durham's older neighborhoods, has completed the first phase of a unique effort to create home ownership in historic neighborhoods. The Perry Building in Old North Durham has been turned in to a cooperative condominium.

The Gold Hill mining district of south-central North Carolina was an important gold producing area during 1842-1853. By the early 1850s Gold Hill established itself as a rewarding mining region but its development was hindered by a lack of specialized knowledge in deep mining methods, the reluctance of residents to turn over agricultural lands to gold prospectors, shortage of skilled miners, lack of investment capital, and an excess of competition between mining companies.

While the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prepared a site to build the Falls of the Neuse Dam and Reservoir in 1978, the crew encountered remains of a historic dam. John W. Clauser, Jr. led a team of archaeologists from the Division of Archives and History to record and salvage the 1830s dam. The site was likely part of the area's rich paper mill industry.

In 1975 it was announced the Alberta Mill in Carrboro, Orange County would be demolished and replaced with a shopping center. However, due to public recognition, the building itself houses the shopping village and an office complex.
