For thousands of years many plants in the Coastal Plain prospered through lightning-caused fires, which burned away surface materials and promoted new growth. As people now occupy these areas, lightning fires are controlled and plant survival is threatened.

Passed by the 1997 General Assembly, HB 1059 amends the Coastal Area Management Act to allow certain kinds of development, like shops and restaurants, over public waters. The law has a three-year limit, and while developers see green and environmentalists red, no one is sure about the law's impact.

Rowan LeCompte, who lives in Wilmington, creates stained glass art. One of his best-known works in the twenty-six-feet West Rose window in the Washington National Cathedral. He also created forty-five other windows there. He is a self-taught artist who has never been without work in his sixty-year career.

The Venus' Flytrap grows only within a 50-to-75-mile radius of Wilmington in the coastal bogs. Discovered in 1760 by Governor Arthur Dobbs, the rare plant is protected by law against unauthorized removal.
