Because of the work of Dr. William S. Powell, professor of history at UNC-CH, and local historians, North Carolina possesses one of the most comprehensive gazetteers of any state in the nation. Titled THE NORTH CAROLINA GAZETTEER: A DICTIONARY OF TAR HEEL PLACES, the reference book records when the state's places were founded, when their names were first used, and how the place-names came into existence.

Judaculla Rock, a boulder measuring forty-eight feet around and covered with petroglyphs, sits near Carney Creek in Jackson County. The rock is the largest example of a petroglyph in North Carolina. How old the petroglyphs are, who carved them, and what their meaning is, is unknown.

The Confederate Prison at Salisbury was designed for 2,500, and the first Union POWs arrived in December 1861. Eventually the prison held 10,000. Food and clothing were scarce, and sanitary conditions were miserable. Things got worse as the war continued. Between four and five thousand Union soldiers died there. When Union General George Stoneman captured Salisbury in 1865, he ordered the prison burned.
